Timarion

Timarion
Famous anonymous satire (ca. 1150), almost anti-Christian in tone, that illustrates the revival of ancient literary genres (including the romance [q.v.]) in the 12th century. It has been attributed variously to Nicholas Kallikles, Michael Italikos, and Theodore Prodromos (qq.v.). In imitation of a work of Lucian, the second century A.D. Greek satirist, it tells the story of a descent into the underworld. Timarion dies and descends into Hades, where he is judged by the Iconoclast Theophilos (qq.v.), and a group of pagan gods. The work begins with Timarion's description of the fair of Thessalonike (q.v.), which is of serious value for the study of 12th-century Byzantine commerce.
